After reviewing my essay, I think that I have used both definitions and compare and contrast methods to complete my essay. Although I believe that I have used both methods to complete my essay, I feel that I have used the compare and contrast method more than the definition method. According to chapter 16 of the textbook, there are four basics of good comparison and contrast. The first step is to make sure that both subjects have enough in common to be usefully compared and contrasted. The second step is that It serves a purpose — that is, it expresses a main point that helps readers make a decision or understand the subjects. The third step is to make sure the essay presents several important, parallel points of comparison and contrast. The final step is to make sure that the essay is organized. I feel that I have properly used all four of these steps to compare and contrast the owning of a house to renting a house or apartment.

The reason I believe that I have used the compare and contrast method more than the definition method is because I feel that both topics have plenty of similarities that makes it fairly easy to list the pros and cons of each topic. Being that both topics are very similar, it makes it easy to explain the advantages that buying and renting have in common. Using the compare and contrast method has made it simpler for me to keep my ideas in order in which I feel that it has kept me from writing a bias essay. The compare and contrast method is a great method to use because it helps the writer view all options on the topic and allows the audience to make a decision according to the information written in the essay. I honestly think that it would have been quite difficult to write a persuasive essay without using any kind of comparing and or contrasting, especially on the topic that I choose to write my essay on.
