In the United States today we have been experiencing the affects of the revolving door system of rewards for service. While this system could be considered merit based in many industries as a form of compensation for services rendered, it is a practice that is becoming all to common with former government employees and large corporations. This practice can and does go both ways, many former industry executives are being appointed to positions in the Federal government and in these are positions that can create policies that directly affect their former employers. These policies range from tax incentives and tax breaks to more favorable and relaxed regulations that could increase the former employers bottom line. An example of this would be Linda Fisher who was the former head of Government Affairs for Monsanto Seed Corporation and she was also the company’s chief lobbyist for ten years before returning to the Federal Government. To illustrate the revolving door, prior to coming Monsanto Corporation she held the position of Assistant Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Pollution Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances. Coming from the government to this position with Monsanto makes sense. Her experience with and within the government agency that was most involved with the regulation of her former employer’s industry made her an ideal lobbying candidate and someone to interact with the Environmental Protection Agency. During her tenure with Monsanto she lobbied tirelessly for her employers interests including the introduction of Roundup ready ® seeds at time when the United States populace was deeply concerned with pesticide use. Remember at this time DDT and other pesticides were being pulled from the marketplace because of the environmental impact theses chemicals had and the Alar pesticide scare in the late nineteen eighties early nineties.
