The invention and popularization of the model minority myth

For the very first time in the 1960’s, the model minority emerged and came out into the open in full. The Asian Americans were looked at as having accomplished their dreams in the United States. They were thought of as having ‘made it’ in every aspect of their lives. This included the society relations as well as the family lives and education. The stories of the success of the model minority spread all over during the same period that the Civil Rights movements was also taking place. The fact that these two events took place at the same time may look coincidental. However, a deeper look into both of them reveals that there were some key players that resulted into this taking place at the same time. Among the clear factors for this happening was the fact that most of the authors at that time were white (David, 1952). The statistics at this period of time did not show the true state of what was happening. The issues that the minority was facing including education problems and the crime rates were not being addressed.

There was no clear focus on the Asian success as opposed to the economic and political markers. The Asians who were being interviewed by the press and their thought published in the articles did not seem to have any bit of sympathy towards what was happening with the civil rights movements. Thus, because there was not a clear sense of honesty in most of these articles, a conclusion had already been drawn that the Asians were indeed being used as a way of silencing the cries of the minorities (Yoo, 2010). This was specifically the African Americans. There are several themes from the original model minority that give evidence of these incidents.
