A Case Study: Jerry McCall

Jerry McCall is Dr. Williams’ office assistant. He has received professional training as both a medical assistant and a LPN. He is handling all the phone calls while the receptionist is at lunch. A patient calls and says he must have a prescription refill for Valium, an antidepressant medication, called in right away to his pharmacy, since he is leaving for the airport in thirty minutes. He says that Dr. Williams is a personal friend and always gives him a small supply of Valium when he has to fly. No one except Jerry is in the office at this time.

Jerry needs to contact Dr. Williams. The patient should come in person to get the prescription filled. Anyone can call and say that they are so and so. There is no proof that the person calling is who he says he is. The caller obviously has some time management issues or may not be in his right state-of-mind. Who calls 30 minutes before one must be at the airport to fill a prescription? Jerry’s medical training does not qualify him to issue this refill order. He is only an office assistant that has received training as a medical assistant and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). If Jerry were a pharmacist or a pharmacy technician he would be qualified to refill the prescription. Valium is used to treat anxiety, acute alcohol withdrawal, as well as seizures (Valium Oral, 2011). Jerry does not know of the patient’s medical condition or even the correct dosage to refill.

It would not make a difference if the medication was for controlling high blood pressure that the patient needs on a daily basis. Jerry is not a pharmacist and does not know the correct dosage to refill for the patient. Jerry should be unaware of the patient’s medical condition. Jerry should either contact Dr. Williams and inform the doctor of the situation or get in contact with the pharmacist to verify the patient’s information.
