Why I Like English

By far the best English class I have taken is Mrs. Foreman’s English comp. Aside from public speaking; I love how she assigned interesting topics to not only writer about but how we could always better our writing and therefore improved us as better writers.

Even though this was by far my favorite class, I did not like the public speaking that is required. For instance, I do not understand why I need to read my essay in front of the class? Mrs. Foreman said it is to get feedback from my peers, but what if my peers do not give a damn or give feedback just to voice an opinion because they do not agree with the writer. Also, I have noticed that when speaking in front of a class students will sometimes get carried away with debating and making it more into personal criticism. For example, a student once was speaking about a personal topic, how illegal immigrants’ were responsible for his dads firing and how all immigrants is trash. Though the student did not do anything wrong because they were speaking their personal opinion about the topic, they caused controversy and personal problems within the classroom because of public speaking and should have best been kept on paper.

What I like about Mrs. Foreman’s class is how she made writing fun and interesting and not, ‘really Mrs. I have to do this’. For instance, instead of her assigning the same and boring topics like gun control, teen pregnancy, favorite vacations, and abortion, Mrs. Foreman’s assigned topics like extra terrestrials, prostitution, obesity, drug use in sports and lots more. Not only did these topics capture our attention but they required a lot of information and as a result would lead us to lots of researching not only at HCC but at home as well. Also, Mrs. Foreman was always very well aware of her students and noticed when they were having difficulty with the topics.
