A leader is an individual with the ability to guide, direct, or influence people. Being a leader is not an easy task but it can run very smoothly with adequate planning. Furthermore, I believe the key to being a good leader is to know one’s strengths and weaknesses. This will help in knowing how to address various problems that may be encountered as a leader. Also, it gives you the scope and in depth level of one’s ability to be objective. Throughout this paper, I will explore what I consider is an effective and less effective leader, their characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses. Furthermore, we will explore my own leadership style and discuss the various strategies and intervention I believe makes a leader successful in motivating and influencing the people around me.

In several areas in my personal life I am considered a leader either by delegation or natural role. For instance, as a youth coordinator and volunteer leader in various groups I assume a different role of leadership compared to my workplace. As a mother and a wife, I am a leader, but these roles require a different form and style of leadership compared to the duties at work. What qualities characterize a leader as effective? I believe a leader has to be open-minded, assertive, decision-maker, has the willingness to learn, be willing to delegate, follow directions as much as their willingness to lead. As a mother, I’ve learn over the years that I must be willing to follow the rules that I require of my children. I have to admit my wrongs and apologize for them the same way my children are expected to do. There is no perfectionism in leadership. Individuals like to have an illusion of perfection but it almost impossible to please everyone and meet all their needs while maintaining efficiency. There are some generic styles of leadership that are commonly used.
