Professor: Renato Balderrama Santander Date: June 10th, 2011 Abstract This paper first introduces the current state of Artificial Intelligence and its definition. Next, it deals with the complexity of achieving strong Artificial Intelligence with the perspectives of different scientists and philosophers. Lastly, the paper also discusses the various benefits and detriments that strong Artificial Intelligence brings, both socially and ethically. Key words: Artificial intelligence, Strong A.I, Weak A.I, Ethics, Realizable, Benefits, Detriments The Realization of Strong Artificial Intelligence Introduction Hollywood‟s portrayal of Artificial Intelligence (A.I) has been aplenty. However, sentient robots shown in those movies are not realistic in the current world. What can be deemed as A.I presently then? A look at the definition of Artificial Intelligence would be required. There exists varying definitions of A.I as people‟s measure of intelligence is based upon perception. It is thus difficult to define what exactly A.I is as different people perceive things differently. Definition According to The Modern Approach, definitions of Artificial Intelligence vary along two main dimensions, one, concerned with thought processes and reasoning, two, with behavior. Also, to judge whether the creation of an A.I system is a success, human performance can be used as a key indicator, as well as against an ideal concept of intelligence, otherwise known as
