The Red Umbrella is the moving tale of a 14 year old girl's journey from Cuba to America as part of Operation Pedro Pan. An organized exodus of more than 14,000 unaccompanied children, whose parents sent them away to escape Fidel Castro's revolution. As I analyze the comparison of this theme and how it compares to my transition to college the first thing that strikes me is sacrifice. Sacrifice

There was a lot of sacrifice in this story. Starting with Lucia Alvarez’s parents. Those parents sacrificed a lot for Lucia. They sent her to another country alone in hopes for a better life. They didn’t know what would happen to there daughter, but they hoped that it would be better then what was happening in Cuba with the revolution. It is not easy for a mother to say good bye to her 14 year old daughter and send her on a journey to another country in such of a better life. She made the sacrifice of not seeing her daughter for a long time so that she can have a better life. Lucia Alvarez’s parents were not the only ones making sacrifices. Lucia Alvarez also had to sacrifice a lot. She left a country where she had many friends and all her family. She just picked up her things and left in hopes of a better life. Thanks to them I wont have a dead end job. Ill have opportunities that they didn’t have. I will have a college degree and I will be able to better my life and the life of my family. This life is all about sacrifices.

As I transition into college and my adult life I need to make a lot of sacrifices like Lucia Alverez did to better her life. You have to do a...
