School Violence:

Parental Responsibility versus School Accountability

Cheryl Worex-Parker

Executive Summary

School violence is a serious problem in our society. This paper will tell about a hypothetical act of school violence committed by a student in America. Research of violence acts will show the responsibility that school officials and the parents have or should have in order to help prevent tragedy. Any areas that deal with peer pressure as a cause of student violence will not be a part of this research.

Not only should schools have educated professionals who can detect when there is an obvious problem with a student, but also those same professionals should never give up on getting the student the help they may need even when the parents do not participate. Many parents, although they care about their child, may not have access to the resources the child may need. In many cases, the school has access to resources at little or no cost to the parent. That resource may have the “one person” who can turn a student’s life around and change violence in schools to peace. The only way to avoid violence is to regularly, and constantly address any potential “bad situation” before it become a serious tragedy. This will only happen when both schools and parents accept their responsibility in preventing school violence
