A LETTER OF ADVICE

Dear Frank and Julie, as your friend and counselor there are some problems we need to work out. Both of you are seeking help and, it would be my privilege and honor to help you to work out these problems, by working with you. Most problems that arise in relationships have come from misunderstandings and a failure to communicate your feeling. Interpersonal communications can help us to identify and put these problems into proper perspective. Not only the words we speak but also our body language facial features all come into play when attempting communication with other people (Sole, 2011).

Our means of communication, particularly through use of language, is one characteristic of beings a part of society. We may think that communication is natural and take it for granted; however, effective communication is a skill that must be learned and is crucial in both personal and professional life. Our parents started teaching us from the day we were born, and it requires awareness of what we and others are doing when we communicate and it requires effort to improve communication skills and to minimize misunderstandings (Sole, 2011).

These actions set us apart from all other species on this planet. It seems to make us uniquely human. Not only do we learn and use language, we also create it and share it with others. Humans also have social minds that allow us to be aware not only of our own thoughts and feelings but those of others as well. We can learn not only the current rules of our society but also the history and accumulated knowledge of generations that went before us. We can also have rich mental lives, reminisce about the past, and create virtual worlds in our minds with our imagination (Sole, 2011).
