Diabetes is a condition whereby the body is not able to regulate levels of glucose (a sugar) in the blood, resulting in too much glucose being present in the blood. Also the pancreas does not produce enough of the hormone insulin or the body does not effectively use the insulin it does produce. Because insulin is instrumental in helping the body convert sugars and starches into necessary energy, there can be serious consequences if diabetes is left undiagnosed and/or untreated. The word Diabetes was coined by Aretaeus (81133 CE) of Cappadocia. The word is derived from the Greek diabanein, which literally means "passing through" or "siphon", a reference to one of the main symptoms of Diabetes - excessive urine discharge.

There are 3 main types of Diabetes:

1. Type 1 Diabetes (also known as Juvenile Onset Diabetes)

2.Type 2 Diabetes (also known as Mature Onset Diabetes) and

3. Gestational Diabetes (occurs during pregnancy)
