Film Review of Braveheart

Braveheart is about a man named William Wallace, who sets out to free Scotland after the death of his wife. This movie takes place during the 13th century in the country of Scotland; an English King named Edward the First has taken control of the land and enslaved its peoples. The Scottish live in a constant fear of English rule, of which all of the noblemen take full advantage of it by granting numerous rights to lords. They are allowed to freely sleep with newly married Scottish women and take their virginities amongst many other atrocities. Many couples marry in secret so that they may consummate the marriage without the knowledge of the English. During the movie the English discover that William Wallace and his wife are newlyweds and one of the lords decides he wants to take advantage of the situation. Having feared the worst William takes matters into his own hands and kill’s some of the English, it ultimately leads to the destruction of Williams’s marriage, the death of his wife, and his abolishment from the village. This directly sparks a revolt within the Scottish populous lead by William Wallace in order to avenge his wife’s death and free the Scottish people from English oppression and rule.

The image that most individuals have when they remember the movie Braveheart is one of a Scottish blue faced man wielding a two-handed claymore and riding midnight black horse. Not only is his name inspirational, but his overall demeanor is one of a leader. He is a man that other men are willing to fight and die along side of in the field of battle. William Wallace is leader who is and was admired for his honesty and courage to stand up and fight for Scotland’s freedom. These demonstrations are evident through the film on numerous occasions.
