Should Euthanasia be legal?

Euthanasia is defined by Merriam-Webster as “the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy.” It derives from the ancient Greek which means “good death”. There are three different classifications of euthanasia. You have voluntary euthanasia, which is euthanasia conducted with the consent of the patient. The second classification of euthanasia is non-voluntary euthanasia which is conducted where the consent of the patient is unavailable. The third classification of euthanasia is involuntary euthanasia which is euthanasia conducted against the will of the patient. These classifications of euthanasia can be broken down even further into passive or active variants. Passive euthanasia involves the withholding of treatment that is necessary to let a person continue life. Active euthanasia involves the use of lethal substances to kill. These are all forms of euthanasia that are being analyzed to play a part in the decision of the legalization of euthanasia in many countries all over the world. As I read this definition I think to myself why would someone want to kill or permit the death of any individual? However, on the reverse side of this argument, I think to myself who wants to live through such unbearable pain? There is a double standard to my philosophy on euthanasia. Some believe that the duty of killing or the taking of anyone’s life should not be in the hands of another person. Other would like to wish or request termination of their lives because of the unbearable pain. Living off of drugs to survive is not healthy. Death is a bad thing because life is basically very valuable. Unfortunately, sometimes it is better to allow nature to take it’s course once treatment goes from saving one’s life to prolonging suffering death.
