Module I - Synopsis: Latin American Economic & Political Situation

Does the Investment Climate Matter? Preface and Is Another Study of Economic Performance in LA and the Caribbean Needed?

Many topics were presented in the reading “Does the Investment Climate Matter? Preface and Is Another Study of Economic Performance in LA and the Caribbean Needed”. Topics consisted of the growth of Latin America’s per capita, and to why one would feel complacent towards it. With this per capita growth, they than analyzed Latin America’s education, training, and the national innovation system. These three themes that I selected to discuss in my journal, somehow I think one way or another they intertwine with one concept to the other. With this said a question I raised when reading this was “Does educating and training Latin Americans increase per capita and if so, why wouldn’t they implement a better system”. With this question raised I will start by summarizing the education, training and the national innovation system mentioned in the article. I will than summarize Latin America’s per capita growth and finally summarizing feelings of complacently towards this growth.

In the article when discussing Latin America’s education and training, I came to the conclusion that they seem to want a better education and training system, for the result of better skilled workers and a better investment on R&D. “Productivity growth is intrinsically related to the availability of a skilled workforce and to the extent to which countries invest in research and development” this was a line stated in the article. To better Latin America’s per capita they seem to want a better education system implemented. From this article you can come to the conclusion that the education system in Latin America isn’t up to par as with East Asia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia, you can tell that Latin America has a lot of catching up to do.
