Communicational Competency Skill versus Art

Introduction

We are continuously communicating and relating with one another even when we are not aware of it. One of the most valuable tools one will ever use is the ability to communicate successfully. Communicative competence is the ability to choose a form of communication that is effective and suitable for a given situation. This paper will discuss whether having communicative competence is a skill or an art. The definition of a skill is something that is learned through experience. Communicative competence can be learned and perfected though many experiences in our daily life and work. As we are continuously exposed to different situations we are forced to learn different ways of communicating effectively which some consider a skill. For something to be an art, first an artist must master their craft and learn the basic principles. Once this is done artists takes these basic skills and polish what they have learned to create masterpieces using their own style and creativity. This can be applied to communication through mastering ways to communicate effectively and developing unique techniques through personality, creativity and tact making it more of an art.

Communicative Competence as a Skill

As stated earlier, the ability to use communication effectively is often thought to be a skill. In a study done on communicative competence in teaching a foreign language it explains the significance of the functions of communication competence. The study demonstrates that in order to achieve communicative competence the development of communicative skills is essential.
