Introduction

Historically, to ‘utilize’ resources efficiently is a concept (Wren & Bedeian 2009). However, there are problems with efficiency in the labour market, Industrialist started to look for solutions to improve the management of resources in organizations to avoid human resources waste and operational waste. Therefore, Scientific management was introduced in the late nineties by Frederick Winslow Taylor. Scientific Management uses scientific approaches in managing workers well to improve productivity. In today’s context, Profit maximization is the main objective of all companies, in order to achieve organizations have to maximize the utilization of resources as well as their employee’s productivity. Hence, Frederick Taylor’s concept and practices on Scientific Management developed in the late nineteen century remained as a benchmark for management systems despite the change in trends in employment relations today. This essay will discuss the reception of scientific management in Japan and Britain and the relevancy between them.

Scientific Management

Scientific Management also known as Taylorism was defined by Frederick Winslow Taylor (The father of Scientific Management) as ‘the best techniques to improve productivity and efficiency to achieve greater co-operation’.(Taylor 1911). Taylorism consisted of a system for supervising employees, improving work methods and providing incentives to employees to induce a win-win situation for both employers and employees. Employers will benefit from the maximum output by workers while employees will get a salary increment. Therefore, Taylor’s optimistic belief that study of the organization through his scientific methods would resolve the most difficult productivity problems and is extremely important to contemporary management.
