Motivational Methods

Motivation is the key in compelling employees to want to perform and produce high quality work. When a person is motivated he or she will work harder, smarter, and faster than an unmotivated person. A quality manager will determine what motivates his or her staff by figuring out the needs of the employees. Three of the most effective motivational methods include incentives, goal setting, and employee empowerment. Motivating the employees will change the organization in positive ways. Motivation will encourage the employees to put more effort into their work at the same time it will increase the quality of work life for the employees. The addition of motivational tools to the organization will help the organization be successful.

Incentives are used to encourage employees to perform and produce higher quality work. “Incentives play an active role in pushing forward individual's capacity and moving abilities, motivating them to develop their skills, and balance between organization requirements and the individuals' needs which enhance the organization performance efficiently and effectively” (Al-Nsour, 2012). Incentives that motivate employees can be financial or moral.

Financial incentives include money paid to employees, trips, or any other materialistic reward. Financial incentives give employees immediate feedback of his or her work. Just as financial rewards motivate people to work harder in order to receive a higher paycheck, when people feel that he or she is not being paid enough money for the work he or she is producing his or her productivity will decrease. Advantages of financial incentives include the positive social and psychological effects on the staff because of his or her ability to buy more. Financial incentives should be used along with other types of incentives so the employees are excited about the opportunity to make more money.
