Without knowing Gary Erickson’s age where would you guess he falls in the four generations of workers as delineated by Zemke?

If I had to guess Erickson’s age, I would presume that he falls in the baby boomers generation. His love of the outdoors,cycling and great food with his passion for business and social responsibility describes the desire of the baby boomers generation. As the leaders of a family and employee-owned company, Erickson developed an innovative business model that integrates social and environmental responsibility into every area of the business. His company is guided by five bottom lines –Sustaining their People, Business, Brands, Community and the Planet. The baby boomer generation is known for having a passion about bringing participation, spirit, heart, and humanity to the workplace and office. They are well educated and increasingly well preserved. Their social, cultural and economic impact on their country has been unprecedented in its history.

Consider the key work values in Table 5.1 on page 153. Recalling that leaders are motivated to act consistently with their values, what values appear to be most important to Gary Erickson?

The values that are most important to Erickson are the environment and social issues. He prides the company and himself on working to understand the impacts from the field to the final product, and helping to create healthier, more sustainable communities (Clifbar). Erickson also believes that every choice has an impact and hopes the choices that are made change things for the better. Things like; creating meaningful programs that address people’s needs, supporting nonprofit organizations, and making sound business decisions. He is also committed to his employees and their happiness. He creates a work place where the employees can live life to the fullest.
