Scholarship Essay

Outstanding academic performance in school, active participation in extracurricular activities, and work experience has allowed me to develop strong quantitative, leadership, and communication skills. These skills have allowed me to excel in many diverse situations and have given me the confidence to pursue a Master’s of Science in Finance at the University of Alabama through the University Scholars program. I believe that my involvement and work done so far at the undergraduate and graduate level has given me a solid foundation for future success in the business world. I plan on completing a Bachelor of Science in Finance specializing in Insurance/Risk Management and a Master of Science in Finance specializing in Real Estate in 4 years, completing the program in May 2012. I understand this is a lofty goal due to the rigorous coursework of the accelerated program, but I know that I have what it takes to succeed and have already successfully completed 4 graduate level courses.

An Insurance Scholarship would allow me to work less at an outside job and focus even more so on my classes and extracurricular activities while at the University of Alabama. Currently, I am serving as the Treasurer for the Alabama Insurance Society and will be working hard to promote the club and hopefully attract even more students to the exciting field of insurance. Also, I am a student leader in Alabama Action each year, which allows me to plan and implement projects to help underprivileged, poorer schools in the Tuscaloosa community. Finally, I have been a volunteer mentor at a local middle school and would like to continue to volunteer there on a weekly basis. I have a passion for giving back and being active in the Tuscaloosa community and feel that there will be even more opportunities available after the devastating tornados that ripped through our community this spring.
