Gandhi became one of the most influential men in history because his beliefs and actions were so contradictory of the world that was continually modernizing. He believed that this western world’s “boast about the wonderful discoveries and the marvelous inventions of science … is an empty boast” because “they offer nothing substantial to the struggling humanity.”[1] When he said this at the turn of the century, the world started revolutionizing the way they lived. However, to Gandhi, I believe that he would think that these breakthroughs did nothing for the struggling humanity.

Science has given us basically everything we use in a 24-hour period. It creates great innovations that help facilitate our daily lives and make it more entertaining. I write this paper on my brand new laptop. To my left is my cell phone, above me is my television and behind me is my iPod. I can access the Internet from basically anywhere and I can look up any facts or see what my friends are doing at every second. In the United States, we live in a world of “me.” Our first priority is what we want and when we want it. If it doesn’t immediately gratify us, we complain, give up and move onto the next thing. We don’t have time to waste because we have a million different things going on. So when we think of the “struggling humanity,” as I did my first time, we think we are doing just fine and that science is helping us out. We need to look at the big picture. Gandhi meant that the struggling humanity is all of humanity. We can’t divide it into different groups. If one part of humanity struggles, we are all struggling. If science helps out 50% of the world and not the other half then it is not successful.

Due to an earthquake, Haiti is suffering from cholera and the death toll is continuously rising. The United States possesses machines that detect when an earthquake is going to happen and builds it’s buildings so they can resist the quake. We have clean water resources and good...
