Google in China

In developing Google.cn, the company followed three key principles. Google had to comply with the laws of China. Google wanted to make sure that the results of Googld.cn had reasonable service for Both China and other users. Self-censorship, like that which we are now required to perform in China, is something that conflicts deeply with our core principles. Google did not want to violate any of the basic principles; this principle was confirmed in the organization. Google felt that they could compromise their principles and give more information to the Chinese; they wanted to be different and serve them effectively. Google kept their core principles, but they slightly changed the details to adjust to the laws of China. People should adhere to their obligations. I do believe that from an ethical perspective I feel that the measures taken by Google were adequate to protect the right of their Chinese users. Google went as far as keeping Google’s email and blogging services outside Chinese territory, the company hoped to protect its user’s privacy and confidentiality. Google wanted standards as high as possible of ethical business conduct. Our communications with our users should be appropriately clear and truthful. Our reputation as a company our users can trust is among our most valuable assets, and it is up to all of us to make sure we that nourish that reputation. One must provide customers with happiness and satisfaction and the truth is always the best interest of the customers.

Moreover, Google was not alone in enabling the censorship of the internet in China. In my judgment and from an ethical perspective I do believe that the actions taken by Google, Cisco, Microsoft and other companies facilitate censorship on the Internet. China wanted to remove any objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or problematic Google information from their users. This was not only the law it was an ethical decision to respect this request. From...
