To be a successful coach, there are 4 guidelines to follow. First, a good coaching relationship is essential. In order for coaching to work, there needs to be trust and collaboration between the coach and employee. By trying to understand things through the employee’s perspective and listening to their needs, it will create a better bond and trust between the two. Coaching with empathy and compassion will further increase your relationship with them and will also lower your own stress levels. Secondly, the employee is the source and director of change. The coaches purpose is to change the employees behavior and put them in the right direction. Third, the employee is whole and unique. By connecting the employee’s life and work experiences, it will help the coach in creating a “whole” for the employee. Lastly, the coach is the facilitator of the employee’s growth. The coaches goal is to expand the employees awareness of strengths, resources, and challenges.

Successful coaches use the following functions; advice, guidance, support, confidence, and competence. Coaches need to show employees how things need to be done, rather than just what needs to be done. This will help them improve their performance. Coaches should provide information about skills and knowledge required for the job, but also with information on how they can acquire these skills and knowledge. The support of a coach is key to developing a good employee, but too much monitoring and control is bad. All coaching is about facilitation. Its important to give employees confidence because it will ultimately increase their performance. NCCI Holdings, Inc. is a great example of the coaching and training that employees undergo to perform their tasks at an efficient level.
