Domestic Labour & Conjugal Family Roles

Procedure

I asked ten people to fill in this survey, 3 of the people surveyed were neighbours who I knew, 1 was my own parent, and the other 6 people were people who worked at my mother’s work who are strangers to me. I asked my neighbours by going to their houses asking them the questions on the survey, and then tallying accordingly. I gave the survey to my mum so she could tally where she thought appropriate. The people from my mum’s work were also giving the survey to tally next to the category they felt appropriate.

Discussion

The most important part of my research is the fact that there is a clear pattern that a majority of the labour chores in the house hold and dealt with by the woman, but tasks such as the bills and money, looking after the children when ill and teaching discipline seems to be shared equally a lot of the time. The reason that this information is important is because it highlights the fact that although there is evidence of joint conjugal roles within the house hold’s, the majority of the research show clearly that a majority of roles in the households have segregated conjugal roles. All of the domestic chores in the within the house hold are mainly done by the wife yet repairs in the household was the only category which had the highest rate of husbands tallied for, which shows that over the years roles within the house hold haven’t changed that much.

In conclusion

From my results it clearly shows that segregated roles are still on the rise within households today. Traditionally women were to stay at home look after the children and do all the domestic roles, and looking back at the research the numbers show that it hasn’t changed that much. As shown the husband hasn’t taken over the woman on the graph in the domestic labour, but it has usually become ‘Shared equally’ if it’s changed at all.
