CSR in India

“Corporate Social Responsibility is multi layered concept that can be differentiated into four interrelated aspects – economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic responsibilities.” (Archie Carroll, 2000) In the early days, CSR was only limited to philanthropy. Wealthy merchants use to give money to encourage particular religion and building of holy places to worship their gods, sometimes they also donated money to overcome natural disasters just to gain trust of people. Then gradually with the time, awareness among the people, in the mid 1900 the CSR came into highlight where all the aspects were given equal importance. Since last 20 years, many companies in India have started the initiative of CSR and are performing very well. The company I would like to focus is Infosys Limited. Infosys was started in 1981 by N. R. Narayana Murthy and six engineers in Pune, India, with an initial investment of US$ 250. Now it has offices in 29 countries, with approximately 145,000 employees worldwide. Its revenue generation is of $6 billion as of 2011. Management in Charge for CSRMrs Sudha Murthy who is one of the directors of the company looks after the proper undergoing of all the CSR work. Management from every level reports her on the progress of the work. It is carried out at almost all levels, right from board of directors to the employees. Their main focus is upon Health, Environment, Education, and Livelihood. Top management regularly reviews the progress of the CSR. (Corporate Social Responsibility- Towards a Sustainable Future 2008, pg 8) Authentication of Process Top management has commissioned Det Norske Veritas AS to access the company’s CSR working and the proper undergoing of the policies formulated by the management and proper reporting of those. They look into policies, performance and practices at Infosys and their proper reporting.
