Jean hall’s holds both bachelor and master degree in business administration; this must have equipped her with many techniques and ways to succeed in her new endeavor. She faces two main problem, leadership and exerting power problem.

Power is the capacity that Jean Hall has to influence the behavior of her department’s staff So that her staffs act in accordance with their supervisor wishes. To develop this power certain criteria has to be met; The staff must completely depend on their supervisor, here we find problem because jean has the least experience and almost her education equates the level of the education of the consultant.

* Power can be demonstrated in many forms. Coercive power , which can be applied by fear , but is the least effective one , especially in jean Hall case , as most off the employee are well educated , and easily can find a replacement for their jobs.

* Reward Power; based on the ability to provide benefits or reward to people , This option is available for jean as from the facts , when she was selected for this position she was given authority to fire, hire, promote , and demote . But the statistics shows that its not very affective one (Langton, responses to power, P ).

* Legitimate Power; Power based on relative position in the organizational hierarchy, jean she is in good position , in the middle management , also she has legitimate power, but this option is not very effective , which will not lead to a complete corporation between her and the rest of her staff.

* Expert Power; Power based on a person’s experience and knowledge. We cannot consider this option, from the fact of the case , we see that the four consultant were strong candidate for this position , at the same time they are in better position , as they have the same education level , and have more field experience in dealing with the various tasks appointed to their department.
