Introduction

Culture is a set of guidelines that people inherit from their social environments that guide how they view the world, respond to it emotionally, and behave in it relative to the natural environment, other people, and supernatural forces or gods. Understanding how people experience health and illness and how they report that experience to health professionals is important. Cultures may be differentiated on the basis of ethnicity, social class, gender, occupation, and any number of other attributes that are associated with shared experience within a group that differentiates it from other groups. Muslims are one of the most misunderstood populations in the United States (Hodge, 2005). This presentation discusses about the demographics, languages and cultural preferences, religious preferences, health concerns, and strategies to provide culturally competent care to Muslim patients.

Demographics

• Total population- Seven million

• Arab- 32.7%

• Indigenous American- 29.5%

• South Asians- 29.3%

• More males than females

• Younger population

Based on a reliable study approximately seven million Muslims live in the United States. Most of them are young. Nearly half of the American Muslims are 20 year old or younger, while 50.5% population are aged between 20 and 65.The percentage of aged Muslims is only 0.5. The average number of Muslim males is 104 where as the average number of Muslim females is 100. Muslims live almost all states of United States. Muslim community consists of almost all races, ethnicities, and nationalities. Muslims are law-abiding, well-educated, and successful professionals. The majority of Muslims live in big cities, including New York City, Houston, Chicago, the San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles, and Dallas.
