I am not the number one fan for coffee. So Starbucks is not really my thing. Unlike most of my friend who always goes to Starbucks to buy a cup of coffee as their routine, I never really been to a Starbucks store before. Well, maybe a couple of times. Therefore, I never really pay attention to how they serve their customers. However, even though I am not a routine in there, Starbucks reputation has been well known even for someone like me. The waiter and waitress are very friendly. For instance, your name will be remembered for the life of the store even if you only been there just once.

It is not until when I read Starbucks book, Onward, that I notice there is always a suffering behind every success. This book basically describes how Starbucks fought for its life without losing its soul. One thing about this book that piqued my interest is about how Starbucks treat their employee more than anything. There is a chapter in this book where Starbucks closed their entire store in the US. In front of every Starbucks locked doors, there is a note posted said: “We’re taking time to perfect our espresso. Great espresso requires practice. That’s why we’re dedicating ourselves to honing our craft.” When I read this sentence, I thought to myself; what a bold move considering we are in the middle of recession. Not only that they suffered a loss of approximately 6 million, but they also lose their market share. Many of Starbucks competitors try to take advantage of this situation and offered a promotion such as 99 Cents per cup. In addition, Starbucks must also spend a significant amount of money to gather and train their barista back from square one. All of this event is happening during the recession. It is true that this is one of the craziest moves that Starbucks ever take. But this shows us just how much dedication that Starbucks put to their employees in order to give a better service to their customers.
