Network Management Systems is huge and is like looking at the breakdown of an operating system in the way that there are so many different working parts that are intertwined in NMS. There are a few different aspects that I will look at that are an added entity of Network Management Systems. For instance, Manager, agent, MIB, RMON, and Probe are all different parts of the Network Management Systems that make it run and analyze data effectively and efficiently. Each part of the system has an agenda to making Network Management Systems run better than any other system for that particular network.

Simple Network Management Protocol has three key components that it needs to work properly a managed device, an Agent, and NMS or the software which runs on the manager. The Agent is the software that runs on the managed device. The agent’s role is the role of the managed network element, as opposed to the managing system. The agent has local knowledge of the management information that is translated to and from the SNMP protocol. With the use of this protocol the networked device will connect to whatever network the SNMP is setup for whether it is an intranet or the internet. The managed device on the network is basically a node that uses SNMP to interface and access the network and SNMP in turn accesses its specific device information to inform the network that this device is okay to operate on the network.

The Manager is the software component of a network element that implements a management interface and handles management communication for the network element. The manager is like HP Openview a software program that allows users to have one device managing the network as a stand-alone device on the network and accessing it as a single viewpoint. The software has dynamic access to the entire network and will be aware if any node goes down much less any user goes...
