• Anglo Conformity - Tendency of immigrants to lose much of their native cultural heritage and conform substantially to the core Anglo-Protestant culture of the United States.
• Old Immigration
o Irish and german
o Northern Europeans
• New Immigration – Gold rush by the Chinese it’s mainly on the west coast
o Segregated
• Chinese Exclusion Act 1882 – these are lynching’s, the act was nationally even though they were used in California. Segregation to the Chinese people.
• Immigration act of 1917 – southern and eastern Europeans. They had to pass a literacy test 8% tax. Most of the people were illiterate.
• Americanization programs – didn’t really work
• National origins formula and immigration act 1924 – only people qualified for naturalized citizenship. “you have to be white”
o Asians did not come in 1924-1948
o Mexicans were allowed in because they are Caucasian
• Melting pot
o Fredrick Jackson turner & the frontier thesis
▪ The foundation of the pot is anglo-saxen culture, “co-exist”
• Cultural pluralism – “multiculturalism
o Jane adams – social worker, she worked with the poor European immigrants
o Horace kallen- opposed any over-simplification of philosophical and vital problems
▪ Denying complications and difficulties is to multiply them, as much as to deny reality to evil would aggravate evil
▪ Argued that cultural diversity and national pride were compatible with each other, and that ethnic diversity and a respect for ethnic and racial differences strengthened America
o Internal colonialism – notion of structural political and economic inequalities between regions within a nation state
o Conflict theory – based upon the view of the fundamental causes of crime are the social and economic forces operating within society.
