Assess the Multiculturalism of Your Organization

1. My organization would be placed high on the continuum of moving from monoculturalism to multiculturalism. We have always taught that there is diversity in numbers. Regardless of someone’s culture, they can all bring something new to the table. My organization has even moved farther because in the past, homosexuals were not allowed in my organization. Today homosexuals are allowed in my organization. With that said, we are confident that this will bring about innovations. My organization will value their differences.

2. The structural changes in recruitment practices, policies, pay and benefits, holidays, work-family balance is already supported as multiculturalism. There is equal pay regardless of your culture or background. All holidays and leave are equal. We have training courses to ensure awareness of not stereotyping or being prejudice towards any group or behavior changes. Policies are written and enforced for the highest ranking official to the lowest.

3. In the workplace, the communication may need to be different from the communication of your culture. Diversity in the workplace should have a common language where everyone could understand. You should avoid using slang when communicating workplace procedures or directions. There may be certain voices that are muted in the organizational dialogue. Employee communication about diversity policies does not limit policies’ impact. The language should be simple and to the point. Employees should be educated why diversity is important and why policies are in place.

4. I think cultural communication, and competencies are necessary to promote more effective intergroup relations. If there is a person that doesn’t have an American background within your organization, do not criticize or judge a certain action that they make. Get educated on why the action was made and find out if it is related to their culture. Make them aware that it can be improper in the...
