Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN)

Maximum transmission distance

Distance between devices is approximately 33 feet.

Two current applications of WPANs

1. Portable PDA's.

2. Laptops.

Research WPAN networks and list one future use of this technology.

RFID – Radio Frequency Identification. A technology that uses a very small computer chip to monitor to monitor things at a far distance.

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

Maximum transmission distance

350 feet.

Two current applications of WLANs

1. Small networks that use laptops.

2. Small networks that use immobile networks and printers.

Research WLAN networks and list one future use of this technology.

Wi-Fi-may likely change phone conversations into being only Wi-fi conversations. There is already video chatting, and so on, and we are just a few steps away from having this be the only type of phone call.

Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN)

Maximum transmission distance

31 miles

Two current applications of WMANs

1. FSO -free space optics

2. IEEE 802.16

Research WMAN networks and list one future use of this technology.

A future use is that it would put an end to cables or wires period. Companies within cities can link to one another with less cost, and less aggravation to the surrounding citizens and areas because there wouldn't be the need to do the construction required to use this.

Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN)

Maximum transmission distance

Beyond 31 miles

Two current applications of WWANs

1. Digital cellular telephony

2. Satellites

Research WWAN networks and list one future use of this technology.
