The Responsibilities of a School Support Learning Officer when supporting students with a disability.

A School Learning Support Officer needs to follow certain work practices to meet the requirements of school policies, procedures and legislation related to working with students with a disability. The standards used are the Code of Conduct and The Disability Standards for Education. These standards offer guidance in areas where an SLSO will need to make personal and ethical decisions. They consist of requirements for staff Behaviour and the standards expected of an SLSO. The Disability Standards are intended to give a student with a disability the same right to education and training as that of a student without a disability in an educationally supportive environment. The standards allow changes to be made to accommodate the needs of students with a disability and address issues of harassment and victimization.

Code of Conduct Procedures:

Duty Of Care:

Staff have a duty of care to protect the well-being of students and foster their interests.

As an SLSO part of their role is to assist the teacher in indoor and outdoor activities. They have a duty of care to assess any risks that are associated with the activity that they are doing and to address them before they undertake that activity.

Respect For People and Property:

All students have the right to be treated with respect, fairness and consistency. Be Courteous and sensitive to the needs of others. Respect the property of others and that of the school.

Fairness and Equity:

Decisions involving individuals should be made on factual information, fairly, with honesty and integrity. As an SLSO it is always best to refer to the class teacher.

Relationships with Students:
