Amazon is among one of the leading ways of shopping online. Over the course of several years this website has grown in popularity, creating other sources in competition. Google has become one of those websites that have replaced websites like Amazon. Other websites such as MySpace and YouTube have also used other ways for many people to find products online they are looking for.

These websites have created a problem for Amazon. Since there are other sources available to the public now, this has impacted sales for the company. This means that Amazon had to think of new ways to keep the traffic, and the customers preferring to choose their website over others. According to the Axia College Chapter One reading (Business Information Systems), “By 2007, Amazon had spent 12 years and some $2 billion building the infrastructure of its online store, which is among the biggest and most reliable in the world. However, Amazon uses only 10 percent of its processing capacity at any one time. As a result, the company has decided to provide a series of computing, storage, and other services that make its infrastructure available to companies and individuals to help them run.” Amazon decided to use three services called the Mechanical Turk, Simple Storage Service (S3), and Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). Mechanical Turk is used by taking processing networks, and then people who are paid to do some of the work that machines may not be able to. Using S3, Amazon can charge business to store data on disk drives, for about 15 cents per gigabyte. With EC2, Amazon for 10 cents an hour the processing power, this in turn is one of a server.
