Students Should Learn World Religions in Public Schools

Yes, students in public schools should learn about world religions. When students learn about world religions, they will develop respect for religious freedoms and diversity. Students will learn to accommodate and respect other religions, they will learn each religion’s believes and values, which enables them to accept them, not as wrong or right. Learning of world religions enables students to develop vital skills including intercultural literacy, interpersonal awareness, and critical thinking, which are essential in the global world. In addition, world religions allow students to develop self-esteem as well as enabling them to gain competencies essential for their welfare in the varied world cultures.

As the world is going global, it is equally essential that students learn about all the religions of the world. As long as teachers in public schools does not support any religion as right or wrong, their learning will be beneficial in understanding their diversity and will learn to tolerate one another. Learning of world religions in public schools should be firmly an educational effort providing students with enriched varying philosophies, moral-systems, and ritual practices that enable students to comprehend world cultures.
