You Decide Ethics Scenario

Organizational ethics are the values, attitudes, and behavioral patterns that define an organization’s operating culture and that determine what an organization holds as acceptable behavior. I believe both business and personal values and ethics go hand in hand, without having personal values and ethics; it would be difficult to have business or organizational values and ethics (Dess, Lumpkin, & Eisner, 2007).

Since Leaders are role models in their organizations. They must be consistent in their words and deeds because their values and beliefs become transparent to organizational members through their behaviors. In addition, a firm's commitment to certain standards or values is generally expressed through their value and mission statements and codes of conduct. These guidelines set the standard of norms, beliefs, and acceptable behavior in the workplace. Other policies and procedures are used to guide employees in handling routine occurrences or events in a uniform manner. It is important to develop policies and procedures carefully so that all employees will be encouraged to behave in an ethical manner (Dess, Lumpkin, & Eisner, 2007).

As a leader or an employee, it is important to make every attempt to lead by example. People often do what they see instead of what they are told. As the new controller for EZdot.com, I am faced with a dilemma. My previous counterpart, I am told, was fired for incompetence so my position is vulnerable. I have also learned that the company is facing some severe cash-flow problems that have been worsened by the recent acquisition of another firm and the bank is seriously concerned about the company's ability to grow. In addition, and worst of all, my new boss, Ryan Roberts, who is EZdot.com's president and major shareholder, is holding a substantial amount of the customer’s checks in his desk drawer without telling me why, and Ryan also plays with the firm's float on a daily...
