 1. | Question : | (TCO A) What disadvantages do wireless networks have? |

|

  | Student Answer: |   | Some of the disadvantages of wireless networks can be: radio signal interference, security issues and health risks. Radio signal interference can occur when signals from other devices disrupt what it is a wireless device is trying to transmit, and also when a wireless device can itself be interference for other devices. Items such as microwave ovens, motors of elevators and any other heavy electrical equipment, outdoor lighting systems, theft protection, cordless telephones can all create interference and cause errors in transmission between the wireless device and the access point. Bluetooth and WLAN 802.11b/g both operate within the same radio frequency and create interference between these type devices. Security issues are a disadvantage. Wireless devices do transmit radio signals over a broad area. It is easy for an attacker to be outdoors and be intent on intercepting the signals from a nearby wireless network. Health risks are another disadvantage. Wireless devices contain radio transmitters and receivers that emit radio frequency energy. It is know that wireless devices do emit low levels of RF when they are being used. High levels of RF can result in biological damage, but at this time not much is known about the lower levels. At this point it should still be considered a health risk until much further study is done. |
