Dear Jane,

You have always been a good friend to me. Although, you are a different race from me you have always been there for me. I appreciate the fact that you did not look at me as a color but as a friend. I am glad that I am here to this day to be able to write you. You have seen what my race and I have endured throughout the years. My people were taken against their free will; forced onto slave ships where they had to endure harsh conditions only to be brought to America and sold as slaves. My people were being lynched because we did not comply with what white people wanted. Through out my life my people and I had unfair circumstances from White people in America except from you of course. You were always able to see what was right and what was wrong. Even when slavery ended, it still was not the end of our suffering. We faced prejudice and discrimination head on through out history. Hey do you remember when some white kids saw us holding hands? They threw rocks and said all kinds of racial slurs towards me. Do you remember how that made us feel?

There have been a lot of political issues and concerns throughout American history, especially in African American history. One of the issues that come to my mind is when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This was an executive order that was issued by Abraham Lincoln, who was the President of the United States in 1863. This proclaimed that some slaves would become free which resulted in about 50,000 slaves being set free. This was a major impact across the nation and at the time and caused many conflicts and outrage amongst a lot people. Ultimately, it resulted in slavery being made illegal everywhere in the United States by the Thirteenth Amendment in December 1865.
