SAFETY, EQUIPMENT, AND THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

1. A student enters their laboratory setting and is getting ready to set up. What preparations should be made?  (16 points)

The first thing that should be done is that your work area should be disinfected with a solution of 9 parts water to 1 part bleach equally a 10% bleach solution suitable for disinfection. Also important is to not allow or participate in any eating or drinking food or beverages. Having open food and beverage containers can cause cross contamination with chemicals and cause injury.

2. A student spills chemicals on his or her skin. Explain the procedure that should be followed. (16 points)

If a student were to spill a chemical on his or her skin they should immediately go to the safety shower and proceed to shower and rinse the body of the chemical for 15-30 minutes. All injuries should also be reported to medical professionals for proper treatment.

3. List three things than one can do to protect oneself from contamination/injury in the laboratory. (24 points)

The three things that one can do to protect one’s self in the lab is 1)” become familiar with the use of all materials, 2) be very cautious and finally 3) avoid any and all distractions.

4. Describe the equipment and explain the function of each of the following: (24 points)
