Immigration and Media Reaction

Morgan Spurlock was the host of a realty television show on the FX network titled 30 days. Each episode of the show featured a person spending time with someone living a different lifestyle he was against. The first episode of the second season featured Frank George who spent 30 days living with the Gonzales family in East Los Angeles. The Gonzales family emigrated illegally from Mexico and George is completely against illegal immigrants living in the United States.

The Bracero Program is a Hispanic immigration government project started in 1942. This program was designed to assist with shortages in the labor industry because of World War II. America recruited Mexican immigrants to work in factories, supporting the war effort. After the war was over many of the Mexican immigrants stayed in the United States continuing to work and send money back to their families in Mexico. Americans ignored the growing number of immigrants until 1965, when the families were allowed to join the immigrants in the United States. It was at that time the Mexican and Asian population rapidly increased. Congress began and continued to pass acts to control the population throughout the years. One of the most popular reform acts is the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act. This issued fines to any employer who was caught with illegal employees but also granted amnesty to illegal immigrants currently in the United States.

In 2006 George was a Minuteman patrolling the border of America and Mexico with his wife. He is very against illegal immigrants and stated that America will be torn apart if something is not done to stop the illegal immigration. It has been six years since this episode, and the country is no closer to coming together on a solution.
