Generation X and a Diversified Workplace

The first article I chose to review is “Are you ready for generation X?” In this article Washburn M.D. (2000) discusses the five ages of generations. Washburn provides a generational analysis which considers the differences in “world view and attitude between various generations of Americans and uses this information to develop insight and business strategies” (Washburn, 2000).

Generation G.I. consists of those born between 1901and 1925. This is the generation of the Great Depression and World War II, the generation of the “American Dream”.

Silent Generation consists of those born between 1926 and 1945. “The dominant motif for the silent generation is allegiance to proper principles such as law and order, patriotism and faith” (Washburn, 2008).

Baby Boomers are those people born between 1945 and 1964. For most of us this would be the generation of our parents. The generation of the baby boomers was the beginning of the “generational gap”. This is the generation of instant gratification, every man for themselves. This generation is roughly 76 million strong.

Generation X consists of people born between 1965 and 1981, also known as the “baby-busters”. This age group consists of about 41 million people. “The emphasis of Generation X is more on close friends and virtual families than on material success or traditional associations” (Washburn, 2000). This generation is predicted to take over the health care field, by introducing new ways of technology to medical practice.

Generation Y is the last generation. This generation consists of those born between 1982 and 2003. This generation is predicted to have a large impact on business and infrastructure. This is the tech-savvy generation, having grown up with computers, email, social networks and instant communication.
