The Land has Eyes

This video reaction paper will briefly discuss my reaction towards the film “The Land has Eyes”. However, I will closely relate the film to the objectives or themes learnt in this unit “Routes & Roots – Oceania Origins and Traditions”.

To begin with, “The Land has Eyes” was written as well as directed by Vilisoni Hereniko and was produced Jeannette Paulson Hereniko. The couples are devoted to the Pacific culture and its preservation. In the movie, the culture presented was a Rotuman culture and this culture is quite similar to those cultures across the Pacific.

The movie was ultimately from the point of view of Viki, a young girl who fought for justice after being mistreated and shamed by the community for being poor and being the daughter of the wrongly-convicted thief. With the “Warrior Woman” being her inspiration, she was able to go through all these hardships and being able to achieve great things such as an opportunity to go to the university through scholarship and so forth.

I really like the soundtrack of the movie and this has somehow influence my reaction. The soundtrack has enabled me to feel angry in some part of the film, also it has enable me to fell sad when something sad happen and so forth. Also the soundtrack is somehow Pacific in a way which is good because it represent the way of the Pacific.

To my belief, the presence of the camera and film crew may have affected the action of the people presented. This is because in certain scenario such as the classroom scene, the teacher’s actions as well as the students’ actions are not natural and they seem to be nervous. Also the Viki’s mother and brother are not acting naturally towards the camera, they seem to be distracted by the camera and the crew. They could have done better. Also even though the language is in Rotuman, which I do not understand, because of the tone of the actors I could say they are greatly influenced by the camera and its crew.
