Abstract

The author seeks to examine the effects that particular temperaments have on the learning strategies that a student chooses to employ in order to discover if the temperament directly influences their success contrary to that of others. Temperaments were established in order to measure the way one responds to their environment. The goal of this research is to determine which temperaments will produce better success when paired with certain learning style using David W. Keirsey’s “Keirsey Temperament Sorter”. The “Inventory of Learning Strategies” by Schmeck will also be used in order to measure the four learning styles: Deep Processing, Elaborative thinking, Methodical Study and Fact retention. 56 students enrolled in the Experimental Psychology lab took the survey in which they were asked a series of questions to see which of the following temperament scales best described him or her: extraversion, introversion, sensing, intuition, thinking, feeling, judging and perceiving. Once this is done the instructors will gather and analyze the results. This not only provides a wide range of results, but conducting research through surveys allows students to respond accurately and honestly. The author will specifically further analyze the relationship between extraversion, introversion, deep processing and elaborative thinking. It is obvious that various influences go into the way that one chooses to do their studying. However, it is particularly important to start with ones personality when analyzing one’s learning style. A learning style as defined by Schmeck can be defined as “a student’s predisposition to adopt a particular learning strategy regardless of the specific learning task in which he is engaged” (Schmeck 1983, p. 240).
