Executive Summary

As with many relationships, there comes a time the individuals involved must decided to make a life time commitment to each other. After receiving several hints from his girlfriend, the professor decides to propose to his girlfriend and sets out to purchase a diamond engagement ring at the mall with a price within his budget of Cdn$2,000 - Cdn$4,000. While at the mall, the professor learned of several characteristics about diamonds which determines the value. The professor had no previous experience with shopping for a diamond ring and wanted to make sure he purchase the best quality with what he can afford as well as pleasing his soon to be fiancé.

There are several characteristics that determine the value of a diamond. The most noteworthy of these are known as the four C’s: color, cut, carat, and clarity (Leff and Zaric, 2006). Within each characteristic, there are various levels which additionally determine the value of the diamond. In addition to the four C’s, diamonds polish, symmetry and certification also play a factor in the total value of the diamond.
