If You Think Communication is All Talk-You Haven’t Been Listening

John F. Kennedy recognized the importance of communication skills when he spoke. In his inaugural address, he gained attention and a lasting memory with this quote, “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country” (Kennedy, 1961). Because awe inspiring quotes like these are so powerful and have changed the world, some feel it is the realm for only the most gifted among us. Art is defined as, “the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance” (dictionary.com, 2012). By definition, most people fall in the ordinary category and cannot envision ascending to the pantheon of master communicators, but this viewpoint is overblown.
