A massage therapist needs superior knowledge of the muscular system to do their job because it requires locating and working with various muscles, especially in the back. They have to be able to locate the muscles and know how they react to certain movements and pressures in order to provide relief for the patient. A sports trainer would need to know the different muscles in the body in order to promote maximum fitness to their athletes. They need to know how the different muscles work together and what muscles need to be targeted to provide maximum results for the sport they are training someone for. They also need to know about muscle recovery and stretching exercises to prevent injury. Massage therapists usually have around two years of education and training before they are allowed a license, while sports trainers usually have at least a four year bachelor degree. As a result, the average massage therapist makes around $43,000 a year while the average sports trainer makes around $53,000 a year.
