The ways which women have been presented over the years has changed drastically. Traditionally women have been stereotyped to be the typical house while who cooks, cleans and looks after her children and husband. However over time things have changed as women have started to find work and being more independent.

One example that supports the view that the media still represents women in traditional stereotypical ways is that in Gaye Tuchman’s 1978 book ‘Hearth and Home’ it is stated that “Women were overwhelmingly presented in two roles, domestic (housewife and mother) and sexual (including romantic).” This quotation from his book shows how women were still stereotyped in the 1970’s in which they were expected by the men to stay at home and look after the house and children. Although women have been stereotyped this way for a long time so this shows that even 34 years ago they were still traditionally expected to carry out those things. This also suggests that women feel like they are expected to do what is stereotypical of them and don’t want to go against it to disappoint their husband.

The last point which supports the view is that “women-oriented media is still that women need to look good for their man” This is proving that even in media today that traditionally stereotypical aspects of women is being portrayed. It a main job for the woman to look...
