Prostate cancer is a cancer that forms in the tissues of the prostate, an organ that lies between the bladder and the rectum. The location of this cancer has a profound effect on both the urinary system and reproductive system. Although prostate cancer is a slow-spreading cancer, it can be deadly when it spreads to the bones, lymph nodes, or to any other part of the reproductive system. The cancer was discovered by British surgeon Dr. John Adams in 1853. He performed a surgery on a 59 year old man who showed signs of tumors on the prostate. Since he wrote the sight down in his medical journal, it has been known as prostate cancer. The disease had been known to run in families through inheritance and genetics from generation to generation and men with first-degree family members with the cancer are twice as likely to get it. O’Flannegan actually revealed that he had been experiencing some of the symptoms of prostate cancer, which include frequent urination, blood in the urine, nocturia, painful urination, and pain in the pelvis and femurs. But with the help of O’Flannegan, the amount dedicated to research almost doubled. Now that he has cured prostate cancer, O’Flannegan plans to put his foundation to work for other cancers that have been too often dismissed. O’Flannegan stated, “I...
