Alzheimer’s

I am going to tell you what I learned about Alzheimer’s disease or also known as, dementia. This is a disease in the brain which many neurons in the cerebrum die, then the cerebral cortex dies and it causes deterioration in the mental function as said in the book. On the website it says that it is an irreversible brain disease that will slowly destroy your memory, and will eventually interfere with every task. In both of these you see that no matter what, your brain is going to slowly take away the memory that you have. For this disease, it is most commonly discovered in patients who are 60 years old. In the book I learned that at first the patient will start out by not being able to do every day task, and then eventually get to the point where they are not able to even speak, or understand what others are saying to them. Along with a person suffering from this disease, they can get other problems along with it. In the book it says that psychiatric symptoms of depression may also occur along with it. Also from the website I have learned that the disease was named after a German doctor by the name of Dr. Alois Alzheimer. He first discovered this disease when he studied the brain tissue of a woman who had died from a mental illness that was unusual. One thing that I found interesting in the book that wasn’t on the website was that this disease can also be linked to other things, other than old age. It can also be linked to people who have had severe brain trauma, alcoholics, severe drug abusers, and other diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease. I have also learned in the book that this disease is also hereditary among families. I never really thought that a lot of people suffered from Alzheimer’s disease until I read on the website how many people actually have it. There are as many as 2.1 million to 5.4 million Americans who are currently or have suffered from this disease. There is no complete cure for Alzheimer’s...
