People are motivated and more productive whenever they feel happy and challenged. It is very important to realize that people are different and feel happy and challenged by different things and it is significant for the manager to understand the nature of every employee. People need to be appreciated as individuals and for their differences.

If employees are never given opportunity to utilize all of their skills, then the employer may never have the benefit of their total performance. Work performance is also contingent upon employee abilities. If employees lack the learned skills or innate talents to do a particular job, then performance will be less than optimal. A third dimension of performance is motivation. Motivation is the act of stimulating someone to get desired course of action. It is a continuous goal oriented process, which could be positive or negative.

Whenever someone decides to work for an organization he/she “signs” a physiological contract with it – the employee will contribute to the organization but the organization will provide to the individual in return. This makes it even more important for the manager to know its employees, their goals and expectations. He/ she should be friendly, thrusting and approachable from one hand and still command respect from the other to get his people to do their jobs.

One of the traits at work are to make people like their job, be involved and believe that their behavior has a real effect on what happens to them. The manager should make every employee feel proud of the well done job and their achievements, as well as rewarding them with recognition, promotion, gifts, praise, salary increase, status.

There are several factors that motivate a person to work. The motivational factors can be broadly divided into monetary and non monetary factors.
