Because everyone shops, everyone is an armchair retail analyst, but First L seems to have hit on something here. UK shoppers don't have much idea of quality (they buy a lot of things out of season, for goodness sake, so their food doesn't taste as it should). On top of that they are very 'branding loyal' in other words when they have plumped for their choice of supermarket they stick with it. They are afraid of trying something new. They are also easily fooled by false indicators of quality and price that Tesco are so good at, e.g. their finest label which is not always, and their specially chosen offers. But Tesco’s great contribution to UK society is their fondness for opening stores everywhere, helping to put other suppliers out of business and their alleged ruthless tough negotiation stance with suppliers.

 & E should only keep the stores that are in upper income neighborhoods and compete as a specialty high end store. It should close the ones they placed in working class neighborhoods. Let's be honest, if you are worried about price and receiving government aid you don't really care that the warehouse has solar panels.

If Fresh & Easy wants to have stores in lower income neighborhoods, it needs to move into some abandoned chain supermarket building and include a large selection of products just like the American supermarkets. Most are about three times as big as the Fresh & Easy stores I have seen around town. Fresh and Easy needs to realize Americans see large store = everyday store / affordable prices, and small store = specialty / high prices.

I'm all for green energy, I have no issue with wind farms or anything, the real future for green energy is hydroelectric power, using the back pressure of dams in concentrated water jets to power turbines.
